Peaceful Spaces: Prep Your Home for the holidays
When it comes to your home there’s more to the holiday season than simply decorating. With short days ahead and more time spent indoors, it's time to get your home cozy and ready to welcome guests for the holidays.
Most importantly, autumn is the perfect time to think about what brings you peace and joy so you can style your home with items that set the right mood for the season. Consider this your sweet and simple guide to creating a peaceful space for celebrating the holidays in style.
Swap your pillows
Every season has its own colors, tone, and mood, so why should your home have the same look all year long? As the seasons change, one of the easiest ways to bring warmth to your home is to swap out your throw pillows based on what time of year it is.
As we transition from summer and head into chillier months, swap out the pillows in your home for pillows with warmer colors and cozy textures. Rust, copper, and terra cotta are beautiful examples of warm colors to emphasize. When looking to bring in new prints, look to a timeless plaid or block print, or go vintage with floral. If you love a floral look, why not go for something hand embroidered? For textures we like tweed, velvet, or knobby wool.
Layer on blankets
Time to get your baskets out and stock them with warm and cozy blankets. Though functional, blankets definitely add to the decor of your home too. Opt for heavier textures like wool, tweed or faux fur.
Find blankets in grounding earth tones and consider draping your sofa or bed with an alpaca wool throw for added layers of comfort.
Stock up on candles
If you’re like me, you are lighting a candle every day and night throughout the colder months. Rather than buying one candle at a time, stock up on your favorite candles in varying vessels to use throughout the holiday season.
Our mid century modern silver candlesticks add a sense of elegance to your home and are perfect for hosting dinner parties. We love these natural beeswax taper candles by Alysia Mazzella, who founded The Beeswax Exchange. Through this program, you can mail in your beeswax scraps to be recycled and reused!
Source wintry, earthy scents like cedarwood, bergamot, or cypress and take care of your candle with a wick trimmer. Alternatively, you could light incense in one of our wood catchall dishes.
Take care of you
While the holiday season is typically about others, don’t forget to care for you too. This is a gentle reminder to take care of yourself by surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy. Decorating your home with found objects that speak to your authenticity is the best way to ensure your home is peaceful and calming.
Our Holiday Decor Favorites
To inspire your home styling, here are some items that bring me peace in my own home.
Our handblown green wine glasses brighten up my open shelving, and they are festive for holiday parties. The footed terra cotta bowl adds some warmth to my entry table and is perfect for holding wintry objects like pine cones. And this hand carved folk art bird tucked on your mantel adds a sweet touch—as well as a humble conversation starter.
Having a peaceful home is especially important during the holidays to ensure you have a cozy place to unwind and relax in between social gatherings.
After all, there’s no place like home for the holidays.
